Impressions of Downtown Sarasota, FL

December 28, 2014  –   64 – 80°F Sunny, calm and a bit humid.  Water temp – 67°F.

It seems like every city I have ever visited has a “Main Street”.  Sarasota is no different. Main street radiates from the waterfront and like a spoke in a wheel outward toward the rest of the city.   From the small park across the street, a city sign declares one of the Sarasota founding fathers were Scottish:

Land of the Scots

I wonder why the Vikings don’t get more credit for founding villages around the coastal areas.  sshh… maybe that is a secret.  Although the sign doesn’t say who the other “American settlers” were who welcomed the remaining Scots into their homes.  I just love ancient historical mysteries, don’t you?

Along Main Street you will find all sorts of shops and restaurants.  Tree lined sidewalks.  A mixture of restaurants, art dealers, finance/banks, and general retail – old and new.

Posh Hotel – except it looked empty and rundown. Posh because there is a sign saying so in the window.

One of the stores is the lovely Friends Jewelry store that helped me with one of my ear rings a few weeks ago.  There are vacationers, residents, boaters, and men in 3 piece suits sharing the sidewalks together.  Everyone in their own little world.

As you walk along Main Street you come to a “Round-a-Bout” at the intersection of Pineapple Avenue and Main street.  Driving a ’round-about’ can be confusing.  How do you take a left when there isn’t one.  You have to go around to the right until you find the street you really want.  If you miss your exit, you have to go around again!  What exactly is so bad about a 4-way stop? Walking a ’round-about’ is just as challenging.  Can you cut across the circle and not get run over?  You don’t just look left and right before crossing the street.  It is left, right, forward, behind and left again.  Walk quickly…left, right, forward, behind….make it to the next street.  Whew!!  Then again… until you find the right spoke of the round about you need.

If you head toward Starbucks, you will find the Whole Foods block.  Turn right and head over to Whole Foods.  There are speakers under the store canopies with light jazz music making the shopper more in the mood to dawdle, look, and spend money.  The only thing that is missing in this eye/ear candy is scent.  No flowering scented plants this time of year to complete the emotional memory.  Honeysuckle would be nice.

Many of the eating establishments also have sidewalk tables.  I am always amazed to see people trying to eat their lunch or dinner while strangers pass them by gawking at what they have chosen to eat.  From my casual observations, it is mostly wine and salad for the ladies and beer and meat for the fellows.  You can tell when one restaurant frontage from another by the sidewalk table decor change.  Each restaurant has their own distinctive look and texture.  Yes, the awnings also give you a sense of change but I usually am looking down so I don’t stumble on the cobblestone walkways.  I don’t want to fall into diners with knives and forks handy.

Restaurant tables - street walk

Black tops for Italian. Brown farther down the street is Mexican. Makes sense?!

I have to admit that if you were from a northern climate and you hadn’t been in sunny fresh air maybe a sidewalk dinner would be terrific.  I don’t want to discourage any of you folks from doing that but next to these tables are cars, exhaust from traffic, and folks breathing over your neck (like me) trying to guess what is left on your plate.  Does it entice me to sit a spell and eat there as well?  Few insects actually.  That is good to know.  I have always wondered about flies buzzing the plate.  That is not a concern here.

As you can see in this picture, Sarasota is making all sorts of progress.  I counted 5 cranes at one point.  Most likely raising the building heights to block the view of the small building behind them and to add waterfront condos.  Those waterfront condos are not inexpensive.  Remember those cars I saw before?

skyline from the park-2

Skyline from Island Park

Again, as a passerby around all this Progress, how close to the buildings do you walk?  Do you hug the building construction fence to escape any fallen debris theorizing that a brick would fall away from the building and not straight down?  OR do you walk next to the street edge farther away from the construction with hopes that nothing will fall that far away from the building?  We saw a couple where the man walked close to the fence and the woman walked by the street.  I figure they were trying to even their chances.

At the intersection of Main Street and Starbucks is the Selby Public Library.  The library was fascinating, actually.  Lots of space, airy, and quiet.  Lots of space for future book inventory.   It was very very quiet with mainly adults and very few children.  I don’t think anyone was whispering, even.  No talking.  Ssshhh.  It has a foreign language sections which I haven’t seen before.

Books in french books in german

Of course, my mind goes immediately to… Germans don’t read fiction?  What is that all about?  I perused the “friends of the library” books for sale.  Alas, no more books on the boat unless I get rid of one.  One for one trade.  That’s the rule, for now.

Just outside of the library, I had a wonderful chat with my Mother on the phone one day sitting next to this young man and his dog.  Best seat in town!

library - boy statue

I did have a couple of people look at me wondering about my conversation.  Maybe I was talking too loud.  I made it quite obvious I was talking into a handheld cell phone showing the phone in my hand.  I am not a weirdo, after all!  I am somewhat normal.  Not like the many people we have seen around town talking to themselves.  We don’t see any cell phone, ear wig, or anything stuck in their ear to indicate a two-way conversation was in progree.  Just constant jabbering.  Listening to their own music of sorts.  Is this a local phenomena?

Merry Christmas!! – Sarasota, FL

Sarasota Christmas Boat Parade –  We were able to view the boat parade from our flybridge.  It turns out there were 24 boats.  Fewer than in years past.  A big deal here at the Marina.  They gussied up the docks, put out tables for customers to eat and view the parade with front row seating, and dock-side parties were in full swing by the time the parade started.

The boats came into the marina in front of the dock, slowly turned toward the island park and then left.  In this way, the judges sitting at the end of the dock could see that the boats were decorated around the entire boat.  In years past, the rumor is, boats were only judged on the one side where the judges sat so boat owners only decorated that one side.

crowd across at the park

From our flybridge, we can see the tip of the island park between two boats in front of us.  Perfect viewing.  Some boats looked like boats with lights on them.  A couple of boats went all out and really put their boat on display.  I only captured a couple boats.

7 pm and the boat parade is about to come our way. This brightly lit boat is in front of us.

I didn’t think the pictures would turn out that well with all the ambient lighting.

One of our neighbors had a choir and a 5 piece orchestra on the top level of their boat.  You can barely see them on the top right.  Very impressive.  When they did the turn in front of the Island Park, they stopped and serenaded the crowd waiting all afternoon on the park perimeter.  I was very impressed.  Christmas carols sung to you by professionals.

Once the parade was over, the partying started in earnest!

We could tell that this Boat Parade was a big deal for the marina and for the city.  The boat parade and festivities attracted lots of folks.  Imagine walking by one of these in the parking lot:

RollsRoyce Ghost

RollsRoyce “Ghost”

Then there was two …..

I was able to detect the new car smell from 5 feet away!  Actually, I was afraid to get any closer.   Obviously, the car dealership was hoping for just the right customer to walk by and say to themselves…hmm why not a RR today?  One was only $378,000.  A mere pittance.  😉

We have seen these kinds of cars occasionally on the road.  Never, to stand by one and breathe on it. Wow!  I did not set any alarms off, that I know.  Better still, no security guard came out and accosted me for standing so close.  Wayne was relieved that I had left my wallet on the boat!!  hahaha

December 4, 2014 – Sarasota, FL – Training!

We have been vacillating between training and waiting.  Let me explain.  At least once a week we have been going out into the ICW or actually GICW (Gulf Intracoastal Waterway) learning how to anchor and navigate.  Sometimes we stay in the marina waters and learn how to dock.  Captain Dana ( http://www.captdana.com ) is a wonderful teacher.  If you ever buy a boat and need one-on-one training, Captain Dana’s the captain for you!

WJ in training!

First Training Day – Wayne and Captain Dana

Wayne is a natural!  He maneuvers the engines like a pro.  When parking the boat you use the engines to go forward, neutral, backward to place the boat where you want it.  Slowly!  No throttle necessary.  When you want to pivot into the slip, you put one engine in reverse and the other in forward.  The boat moves accordingly.  How’s that for physics.  He has docked (parked) our Always Home back in our slip every time after the first lesson.  He has parallel docked our boat in practice so we know what to expect is we end up on an end slot at a marina in the future.

With Captain Dana’s guidance, we have taken the boat out to practice “anchoring”. Of course, the first time we tried to anchor was a windy day.  We went to Jewfish Key anchorage area about 10 nautical miles away.  It is a local favorite.  A sandbar is close enough for shell collecting, fishing, or swimming.  We didn’t get close to the sandbar.  We wanted to swing and sway away from everyone incase the anchor didn’t hold.

Daytrip to our first anchor

Leaving the marina for our first Anchor training.

leaving our first anchor

Our First anchor spot. How grand is this?

I was on the end of the pulpit swaying with the waves and being buffeted about with the wind that I didn’t feel the “tug” that folks describe when the anchor sets.  I was busy trying to figure out how to put a anchor bridal on the chain.  It is a length of rope with a hook that you attach to the anchor chain to help keep the strain of the anchor off the very end of the boat.  Instead the bridal shares the strain with the boat by attaching to the two front cleats not just the pulpit or pointy thing that sticks out in front.  This meant I was on my stomach with one hand on the boat and one hand on the rope and hook.  Sounds easy until you remember that it was windy, wavy, and I don’t normally crawl around on my belly like a reptile.  Fun times.

Wayne said he could tell the anchor was set.  But I wasn’t so sure.  After a nerve wracking lunch, we pulled up the anchor and headed back to the marina.  Exhausted!  First times are always exciting and stressful at the same time.

We needed to practice this again.  So, we did…

purple building anchor spot

Anchor spot 2: See the purple building?

Nice spot.  We went north again along the GICW looking for deep enough water to anchor in.  We ended up coming back toward the marina just opposite the “Purple Buidling”.  The purple building is a Sarasota landmark.  It is the Van Wezel Perfroming Arts Hall.  The color does make the building stand out whether on land or sea.  If I look with binoculars the buildings around it are also painted bright lime, orange, and pinks.  I figure it is all about the surrounding color scheme.  We were in 8 feet of water.  Plenty for us to anchor, have lunch, pull up the anchor and head back to the marina.  This time everything went smoother.  Practice does help a great deal!

Our latest trip out was to reinforce navigation using our new chart plotter.  Another gorgeous day.  Glad we had sunglasses on.  The water was really glaring.

Nav training Dec 2

Early December 2014 going North on the GICW.

If you wonder why every time we go venturing out the weather is perfect.  It is done on purpose.  We check at least 3 different weather sources to make sure the wind isn’t too brisk, the waves are not too high, nor rain in the forecast.  Perfect weather to get the best training.  Once we are on our own, we will be continually selective about the weather and water conditions before throwing our lines or pulling up anchor.  Right?

Waiting?  Waiting for the marine contractors to show up and work on the boat.  We don’t know when they are going to arrive nor what days.  This is “marina time”.  If another boat has an emergency, our name steps down a peg until their emergency is corrected.  We understand.  We are about 95% complete now on the submitted items.  Electrical work, plumbing, and installation of a washer/dryer.

Washer:Dryer

Splendide – vented washer/dryer

No more laundry mats!  This is awesome little tool Wayne is very happy about.  It washes and drys in the single machine.  Small loads.  We bought a vented machine so it actually dries towels and my jeans.  This machine is commonly found in RV’s.  In fact, an RV supplier delivered our machine to the marina.  We had some strong young men help heft it up and over the back rail.

Our little boat is becoming more and more our “Always Home”…..

New Moniker

Always Home – our name is on the back of the boat, now.

December 3, 2014 Sarasota, FL – Just easily amused

Our weather is becoming boring.  You know, the low 60’s to the low 80’s.  Sunny with a few clouds.  This is what Florida is for snowbirds.  Beautiful!!

Every time we go off the dock and wander around the area, I have my handy-dandy smart phone so I can take a quick picture or two. Sometimes I see something new and just have to record it for all posterity.  What would I find interesting? How about a normal bicycle rack?  We see them at the front of buildings everywhere.

normal array of bikes

Normal bike rack

If there are more than one bicycle in the group does this make it a clutch of bikes? A school of bikes? A herd of bikes? Hmmmm  However, occasionally I see a bicycle like no other. Here are my favorites:

bike baskets

Bike Baskets of flowers

flamingo bike

Pink Flamingo Bike

And then you can’t walk by and not record… Rocket Bike.  If you look closer on the handle bars is “Rocket Queen”.  How fun!

Sometimes I am easily amused.  To me there seems to be something wrong with this picture.  Don’t tell me it is all about physics and torc.  I get that.  It is the size of the motor compared to the size of the propeller.  The propeller is the size of a small kickball.  The motor is larger than I can hug weighing at around a hundred pound.  Must be a guy thing….

motor size vs propeller

I know it has to be a guy thing.  More power!!  These 3 engines aren’t even on the Police boat.  These engines are on a fast “go fishing” boat.  Time is money and I guess the boat owner wants to get to that sweet spot before anyone else.

3 engines

Of course, this fishing entrepreneur isn’t making any money at the dock.  Maybe the fish aren’t biting today?!

November 28, 2014 Sarasota, FL – Stop! I want to get off!!

November 28, 2014  Sarasota, FL  45 – 62°F   Water temp 64°F

Today started cold.  The day turned into cloudless blue sunny skies.  Perfect day in Florida!  Since we are visiting we might be called transients, snowbirds, or just crazy!

Let’s go back a couple of days and let me tell you why I wanted to get off.

We had a cold front come through.  Yep, like most areas around the country we had high winds.  This time, however, our winds came from the south.  Pretty strong winds for us anyway.   Gusts up to 30 mph.  Wind and water splashing at our bow for almost 2 days.

Here is a an aerial view of Sarasota Bay.

1

Sarasota Bay

As we zoom in:  The southern winds pushed the bay water up into the land.  The waves were reported to be 4 – 7 feet.  We were seeing white caps coming toward us.

2

We are at the top of this picture.

There are a line of boats between us and this larger body of water.  We watched the large boats heave up and down.  The waves crashing on their sides and splashing up on the dock.  Extra lines were put out to make sure these 75 – 100 foot boats didn’t break free and wander on their own.

3

Marina Jack – we are currently berthed on the left side

The dock is a concrete floating dock.  There are concrete pilings or posts.  The dock sections roll up and down the pilings as tides and waves come into the marina.  Pretty interesting.  Hearing the rollers squeal as they moved up and down just added to the whole experience.

rollers on floating dock

Floating dock rollers

All the boats were moving at a different rhythm based on their buoyancy.  The smaller the boat, the more it bounced up and down with the waves.

I don’t know if this video will work on your device.  I took a few seconds to show the boats floating around us.  Off in the distance I zoomed in on the little pleasure craft.  It was really bouncing about!

Our boat was moving up and down, back and forth stretching the lines.  After a bit, I decided I had enough of all the motion.  I was drinking ginger ale so I didn’t get seasick. I  wanted to stop all the movement!  Give my eyes and semicircular canals a rest.   I looked down the concrete dock and saw it moving in sections.  Boats moving.  Dock moving.  Oh dear.  I went up to the Marina office figuring it was land but I could still feel movement.  Maybe it was my imagination.  I ended up going to the parking lot.  Surely, where there are cars there has to be land.  Real land.  Non-moving land.  I looked away from the marina at buildings hoping they were not moving.  It took me several minutes to stop swaying.
