September 5, 2015 – Michigan City, Indiana

Good morning!  We got up late this morning and missed the sunrise.  We knew we were going to be here again today with the impending storm heading our way.  A squall is what “Captain Ron” would call it.  “It comes up suddenly and goes away just as quickly.”  Or something like that from the movie “Captain Ron”.  Great movie, by the way.

We got our squall.  It was windier and more sudden than we expected.  Lightning and thunder right overhead.  2 hours later, the sun came out and the holiday weekend had already started.

We heard music from the park next door.  We wondered over there.  Apparently, there was a big event planned.  From one tent we heard Country Music.  Down the way we heard Salsa from another tent.  We didn’t see many people dancing in either tent.  We saw kiddie rides still not finished putting up as if the storm interrupted their assembly.  The food people were just getting started selling their popcorn, meat-kabobs, and such.  We had ice-cream.  Yes, I know.  We have eaten more ice-cream during this trip than we have in a year.

We saw a tall statue at the front of the park.  It looked quite grand and distinguished.  We had to take a look.  Doesn’t it look wonderful.

19.33 - 7.33pm - statue Michigan City 9-05-15

I didn’t expect it to be about the Civil War.  This is the first Civil War remembrance we have seen.  Quite unexpected in Michigan City, Indiana.

19.34 - 7.34pm - plaque by tall statue 9-05-15

19.39 - 7.39pm - WWI statue 9-05-15

There had to have been more statues in this park WWII and others.  We didn’t see them.  The sun was setting and it was getting to that twilight stage.

We did see the Whispering Stones.  I assumed that when the wind blew through them there made noise.  My first impression?  You know how modern art goes for that first impression…gut level?  Well…I thought the stones were heads.  These were heads on stakes and I did’t know exactly why that would be art.  That is my impression.  Maybe if they whispered?  oh…no…then I know there were heads.  Let us just move on.

After a nice walk around the marina and adjoining park, we called it a day.

September 4, 2015 – South Haven, MI to Michigan City, IN

Good Morning, Early Risers!!  You have to get up pretty early in the morning to make it to Michigan City, IN.  Ready to go?  All that rock-‘n Roll’n last night in the slip didn’t keep you awake, did it?

6.57am - daybreak South Haven 9-04-15

Daybreak at South Haven, MI

7.04am - leaving South Haven 9-04-15

Leaving South Haven heading back out into Lake Michigan

We have a bunch of miles to go today.  Anywhere from 50 – 60 depending on the mileage chart you use.  Isn’t that funny?  Well, it depends on the zip code, city proper, and the course you set on your handy dandy chart plotter.

7.10am - passing the light house on our way out 9-04-15

Passing the light house on our way into Lake Michigan

Finally, the sun breaks the horizon for just a few minutes.

7.20am - finally sunrise 9-04-15

The sun winking at you!?!

It is forecasted to be an excellent day on Lake Michigan.  Less than 1 foot rollers.  Cool and cloudy.  I was even able to skip down to the galley and make breakfast today.  Bacon, eggs, and biscuits with saw-mill gravy.  No, not really.  My standard ham, cheese, and scrambled egg english muffin combo – it was delish!!  Altho, the saw-mill gravy sounds pretty darn delicious right now!

I took several pictures of the flat water.  I know you may think I am nuts.  Considering the high waves we have waited out, this is perfect Lake Michigan.  We can tell tales of the time when Lake Michigan actually had flat waves!!

10.55am - really rolls only 9-04-15

How flat can Lake Michigan get?

Ever so briefly, I felt a tingle.  We cruised out of Michigan and into Indiana.  A warm tingle, I tell you!

12.44pm - rolls with wind 9-04-15

Entering Indiana

We knew where we were going.  Look toward the energy plant and the marina is right next door.

13.22 - 1.22pm - power plant 9-04-15 13.27 - 1.27pm - power plant as we got closer 9-04-15

We stopped for a quick pump out and slip assignment.  Everyone that comes in goes to the fuel dock first.  The fuel dock is the closest to the office.  I climbed off the boat and paid the bill, got the key to the washrooms, and the envelope with local touristy information.  Very well organized office folks.  Luckily, we were able to get some help when we pulled into our slip.  The fuel attendant ran from our boat to SeaHorse to help each of us at almost the same time.  The docks are metal which sounded so strange.  They also buckle and move differently than the customary wooden docks.  Pretty weird noises every time we stepped off the boat.  The docks are excellent and high so we didn’t have to put up our ladder.  A step stool is all we need.  It is just a different sensation.

We are expecting to stay here at least two nights.  That pesky weather is kicking up a possible storm tomorrow.

September 3, 2015 – Grand Haven, MI to South Haven, MI

Good morning!  We are on our way to South Haven today.  A 55 mile cruise in one foot or less waves expected.  We really enjoyed our Grand Haven visit but were told by the marina that we couldn’t stay beyond our two days.  Alas, we must come back to explore Grand Haven more.  Cloudy and humid temperature will be our morning.

7.01am - sunrising Grand Haven 09-03-15

Sunrising in Grand Haven at 7am

Our trip for you map folks.  Or as I call us ( yes, I am including me) geography deprived folks…   This is still the eastern shore of Lake Michigan.  The western side of the state of Michigan.  Confused yet?

Leaving Grand Haven, MI

8.04am - sun peaking thru 09-03-15

Sun peeking through the clouds at 8am

The lake was as expected.  0.25meter waves.  Most of which are on the bow so we were going up and down rather than side to side.  Easier to time if you wanted to walk around the boat.  My steps were 1 – 2 steps…pause… 1-2 step pause.  Like I was dancing!!  Keeping the knees bent so absorb some of the easier rollers.  Dancing down the steps from the flybridge to the enclosure, down the steps to the galley and make Wayne & I some breakfast.  I really should have hummed a beat to make the process easier.

10.42am - 1-2ft with occassional 3 ft 09-03-15

Rollers – 1-2 foot seas with an occasional 3 footer

We made good time and docked  2 1/2 times in South Haven by 1:30pm.  When we arrived, the lady at the South Haven Municipal Marina was using a different radio channel than we expected.  We finally saw her waving her arms.  Ok…park your boat across the river until we can assign you a place. (number 1)  No problem.  I got the mid cleat line ready.  I lasooed the cleat like I knew what I was doing. Boat secured,  Wayne turned off the engines and we waited.  I did make a reservation.  They knew we were coming.

South Haven

Docking multiple times at South Haven

Finally, a young man came out of the building and told us to go around to the back to another slip.  He would meet us there.  OK.  We un-tied the lines, Wayne backed out and around the corner we went.  In the above picture you can clearly see the curve and look for the number 2.  Wayne steered us to the slip.  We went in – thud.  “Wayne, go more to your starboard.”  – thud –  The young man was perplexed.  I asked him “how wide is this slip?”  The answer on the radio was 16 feet.  “We are 16 feet!  There is no way we can slide into this slip.”  Oh, we will have to find you another slip.  OK!!  After a few minutes that seemed like hours as Always Home is rubbing against the posts.  – thud-  We aren’t going in!!  The mysterious woman on the radio told us to go to slip 3.  Wayne thought the circle was open on both ends.  Nope.  He did a 360 turn in the bottom of the circle ( with several men watching) and out into the Black River we go.  We found slip 3.  It was marginally wider – maybe 17.5 feet wide.  We fit.  Barely room for a fender.   Let’s call it a day!!

Thus, we docked the boat 2 1/2 times today!  Or should we call it a 2 dock + a thud dock day?

The wind was picking up and the waves from all the boats coming and going along the Black River was rocking us as we were finally tying off.  Whew!  At least we had a berth for the night.  Only 1 night, here.  Again, with the Labor Day holiday coming along, we can only stay the one night.  They are booked up for the weekend.  Fine!

As you look at the map above, you can see we are on the north side of Black River.  The town – restaurants, stores, and bars are all on the south side.  We had the Park on our side. Actually, we were quite fine with the park.  It gave us an opportunity to stretch our legs and check out the wild life in South Haven, MI.  Both sides of the Black River has excellent boater facilities.

We watched the black squirrels gather acorns.  We watched a black squirrel chase a grey squirrel through the trees.  Fun.  The black squirrels are hard to photograph under the heavily shaded trees.  This one looks like a silhouette.

17.07 - 5.07pm - black squirrel 09-03-15

Black squirrel on the limb

I will need to research these black squirrels.  Do they intermingle with the grays that I have seen in Tennessee, Virginia, and Georgia?

17.09 - 5.07pm - black squirrel C 09-03-15

Large oak trees and little sunshine mean mushrooms!!  Glory be, there be mushrooms!  Fungi!!  But, wait.  If the squirrels don’t eat them, I won’t be picking them up for dinner, either!  Nothing exotic.  Looks like the run-of-the-mill  sh’rooms in every wooded area.

17.08 - 5.08pm - mushroom B 09-03-15

17.09 - 5.09pm - more mushrooms 09-03-15

Could these be hibiscus??  They are about the size of dessert plates.  Nice!!

Just up river from our slip is a bascule bridge.  We walked across the bridge to see what we could see….

17.16 - 5.16pm - Bascule Bridge sign 09-03-15

Dyckman Avenue Bascule Bridge

Along the north side of the bride fence are PVC pipe planters.  All planted with beautiful flowers.  Many of the white pipe sections were commemorating / gifted to the city in memory of a loved one.  I liked the use of a nifty PVC pipe as temporary planters.

Down from the bridge across from the park is this little Inn.  Don’t you just love the colors of the shutters and awnings?  Flowers out front.  Very nice.

A sign found in the city park.  Who knew that freestone peaches came from Haven!

We have been seeing these butterflies for the last week or so.  They flitter by the boat even on the open Lake Michigan waters.  I was able to capture a picture of one amongst the flower bed.  16.57 - 4.57pm - butterflies B 09-03-15

Camouflaged well, don’t you think?

Can you see the butterfly now?

Although we were on the north side of the Black River, we could hear the Jazz concert being conducted on the south side.  The concert went far into dusk.  Folks brought their lawn chairs, blankets, and food/drink and enjoyed the music.

September 2, 2015 – Grand Haven – 2nd night

Good morning, Folks.  Today we stay put due to high wind.  Gusts in the upper teens and lower twenties makes us prefer to stay at the dock.

Wednesday and Saturday morning, Grand Haven has a farmer’s market.  We went and came back with several bags of goodies.  Nectarines and tomatoes.  A couple of pretzels to munch on.  All the vegetables looked really good.  No soap dealers in this market.  No cinamon buns either.

We met several Loopers that were also at the marina after returning from the Farmer’s Market.  We decided to have a Pot Luck later in the evening.  We volunteered to bring chicken wings.  Something I thought we had in the freezer.  We did not.  No problem.  We will just go get some.  Luckily for us, Grand Haven has a solution for that.  Grand Haven Harbor Transit.  They picked Wayne and I up at the marina and took us to Walmart!  Only 2.5 miles away.  We did get to see a bit more of the inner city because the bus driver had to pick up a couple more passengers on the way.  How cool is that?  When we were done with our shopping we called again.  The Harbor Transit isn’t free.  It cost us 75 cents each one way.  For a mere $3.00 we were did round trip to Walmart Super center.  Very nice!

Because we were so busy with other odds and ends, I didn’t capture too many more pictures of the lovely town.

12.29pm - too windy for the birds! 09-01-15

Too windy for the birds!!

Looper crew from SeaHorse, ABamaDream, and Gud-Nuff joined us under a large tree for our pot luck.  A couple of folks from nearby boats also joined us because they are “looper wannabes”.  Soon they will join the Looper family.

Down by the grandstands that are set up for the nightly Grand Haven Musical Fountain, a jazz band set up.  They played jazz music as folks hit the dance floor.  We had great background music during our dinner.

This is a great town with great amenities.  We would have stayed longer but they were booked up for the weekend.  We will need to move on in the morning.

September 1, 2015 – From Muskegon, MI to Grand Haven, MI

Good Morning, Cruisers!!  We are in for a very short day today.  We are going from Muskegon to Grand Haven.  A 20 mile run.  But necessary so that our next stop will be a shorter run.  After being held up in Petoskey for so long, we are happy to make progress.  Actually, as I think back, we could do with a short day after the last 2 long days.  Gives us a break, get a nap in, and a short walk.

muskegon to grand haven

By the way, I do have a map on the top of this blog that will show you where we have stopped so far using Google Maps.  Check it out.

Patchy fog in the forecast.  A bit humid at about 70°F.  Where’d that 50°F go?  Oh wait.  It is summer time.  Gotcha!

They didn’t throw a huge wake so I was able to stand on the bow and take these pictures.  Very neat.  Up close and almost personal.

Here’s the USCG McLane again.  Looks good.

Just can’t get a good shot of the submarine…it it there somewhere!!  Maybe if was pink…

We did the 20 miles in these rolling waves.  Not too bad.  The wind should pick up later in the afternoon, as it always seems to.

We entered Grand River into Grand Haven shortly after noon.  I like this 4 stall boat garage.

We docked in the Grand Haven Municipal Marina right near the downtown.  A very nice location.  When I called they told me our assigned slip.  #8.  We weren’t sure whether to believe them.  Yes.  Slip 8!  Two marina employees came right out to help with the lines.  The wind was starting to be a bother pushing us to starboard when we wanted to go to port.  The docks hands did a great job.

The downtown area has all sorts of shops, restaurants, and an occasional portrait of a historical figure.  I didn’t get too many shots of the downtown area because I thought we would be back later.  Right along the water front are the expected tourist shops and would you believe it, ice-cream.  We just had to stop and partake of the “Grand Haven Turtle”.  World renown “Turtle Sunday”.  Caramel, chocolate, pecans, whipped cream, cherry and somewhere there was ice-cream.  Hmmm Hmmm Hmmm  It was also lunch.  Time for a nap.  Wouldn’t you after such a stressful morning?!  hahaha

18.19 - 6.19pm - fancy car near the portrait 09-01-15

Fancy car near the Portrait – good color

Grand Haven has evening entertainment for the whole family.  Grand Haven Musical Fountain is a free synchronized water and light show they put on during the summer.  Bleachers are set up.  I took a couple of shots with my camera on “fireworks” to see how it would perform.  Not too bad.  25 minutes of toe tapping fun!
